Manager, Communications & Event Operations – Ottawa Blackjacks
Reports to: Director, Operations and President, Ottawa BlackJacks
Location: Ottawa, ON
Job Type: Full-time Permanent
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Manager of Communications & Event Operations will play a key role in the development and promotion of the BlackJacks presence within the Ottawa community. The role will plan, implement and evaluate the marketing, communications and game operations strategies of the BlackJacks to advance their image, profile and reputation in accordance with CEBL Brand guidelines. Supervisory responsibilities include the street team, mascot(s), game day crew, and gameday manager ensuring the policies and procedures of the CEBL are adhered to.
Roles & Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Build the annual operational plans for the community relations, marketing, and game operation departments to ensure that Ottawa BlackJacks maintain a high standard of achievement in each year over year
- Implement strategic brand and community relation initiatives with the purpose of broadening the awareness and presence of the BlackJacks within the community
- Develop, deliver, and manage content for team social media and digital platforms adhering to CEBL brand guidelines
- Write, edit and distribute media releases as required
- Plan and execute press conferences when required for major BlackJacks’ announcements
- Build, manage and maintain relationships with key members of the Ottawa media and other various media outlets and key influencers
- Update and maintain the media database and continually build on it as new media is discovered
- Develop relationships with local community organizations
- Organize giveaways and contests in order to create brand awareness
- Seek out, and plan the execution of community events to further promote the organization within the city of Ottawa and surrounding area
- Develop, coordinate and oversee all community relation functions where any member of the BlackJacks organization is present
- Assist with sponsor activations and player/coach engagement with corporate partners
- Support in conducting relevant market research and monitoring of trends
- In charge of hiring positions relating to part time and seasonal game operations roles including but not limited to the Gameday Manager, PA Announcer, DJ, Host with the assistance from the League Office
- Provide support on game day to Gameday Manager to ensure that the CEBL event standards are followed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management, Business, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in a Marketing/PR role
- Competent with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube)
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) as well as Google Suite Products (Docs, Sheets, Gmail)
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications considered an asset
- Valid Driver’s License
- Special consideration will be given to bilingual candidates

- Superior written, oral, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
- Ability to effectively manage time and priorities; exceptional project management skills
- Exceptional organizational skills with thorough attention to detail
- Ability to identify and maximize resources required to accomplish objectives
- Strong ability to build and maintain strategic professional relationships
- Knowledge of the sport of basketball is an asset
